Woman hit by car on zebra crossing

A woman was seriously injured Tuesday night after being hit by a car on a zebra crossing in Malé.

Two women were hit by the car on the zebra cross near the Senahiya hospital in the capital’s expanded outer road, local media reported. One of the victims sustained serious injuries after she fell down and hit her head on a speed bumper, according to eye witnesses.

She was unconscious when she was taken to the ADK hospital and treated at the intensive care unit.

The hospital managing director told Raajje TV on Wednesday morning that she remains in critical condition.

Police have meanwhile appealed for eyewitnesses to come forward. The accident was reported around 6:24pm, police said.

The 2.2 square mile island of Malé is one of the most congested cities in the world. The capital’s narrow roads are used by a fleet of more than 800 four-wheeled vehicles and more than 90,000 motorcycles, a number that is expected to rise with the opening of Sinamalé bridge in September.

A road safety awareness campaign was launched this month following a spike in accidents since the opening of the bridge, which connects the capital to a new urban centre under development on the reclaimed island of Hulhumalé.

Some 271 traffic accidents have been reported so far this year, according to police statistics.
