News in brief: buy a T-shirt, plant a tree

A campaign to plant a coconut palm for customers who buy a T-shirt was launched on Saturday. The Beyya campaign in collaboration with national airline Maldivian was inaugurated by Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Buyers will receive an email with details of the plant, including the island where it was plant, according to the Beyya company.

The T-shirts will be available from company’s website and from Maldivian. It will soon be available from the airport’s Moonimaa lounge, according to Maldivian.

Coastguard stopped seven Sri Lankan boats

The coastguard seized seven Sri Lankan boats illegally fishing in Maldivian territorial waters on Friday.

The boats were found about 175 miles east of Malé after the coastguard was tipped off by a local fishing boat. Two of the boats were fishing with nets when the coastguard arrived, Major Ibrahim Azim told the media. All seven boats were escorted to the capital by the Shaheed Ali ship.

1.6kg of cocaine seized from Brazilian tourists

Customs seized 1.6kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of MVR5.6 million (US$363,000) from two Brazilian tourists who arrived in the Maldives last October.

In both cases, the men were found to have swallowed the drug packages, customs said on Friday. The first suspect, aged 42, arrived at the airport on October 6. The package he swallowed weighed 837.2 grammes.

In the second case, a package that weighed 765.5 grammes was recovered from the body of a 29-year-old man who arrived on October 25.
