The Maldives is to celebrate National Patriotism Day on March 6, President Abdulla Yameen has said.
“It is an important national campaign to instill patriotism within society,” said Wednesday’s announcement on the president’s website about the event, which is the first of its kind in the country. It is “aimed at promoting unity and culture along with boosting religious faith and national spirit.”
The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Tharika (heritage) Committee have been assigned to carry out all administrative responsibilities for the festivities.
But the news has drawn criticism on social media.
“After destroying national heritage marking national patriotism day. What nonsense,” tweeted one user.
It is not clear if National Patriotism Day, which this year falls on a Tuesday, will be a public holiday.
