Two policemen injured as fire burns down accommodation block

Two police officers sustained injuries as a fire destroyed the police accommodation block on Villigili island in the southern Gaaf Alif atoll.

The fire was reported around 1:45am and extinguished by 5am Sunday morning, according to police.

One officer suffered serious burns and the other dislocated his shoulder. The officers were transferred to the Thinadhoo regional hospital after treatment at the Gaaf Alif atoll hospital. Arrangements are being made to fly them to Malé for further treatment.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire.
