A five-year-old Chinese boy was found dead in the sea close to the water villa he had been staying in with his parents, local media reported.
The child was reported missing to police at 8:55 pm on Friday and his body was discovered about an hour later in the ocean, police confirmed to Avas.
Police did not confirm where the incident happened but Avas identified the resort as OBLU Select at Sangelhi, North Malé atoll.
The Maldives Independent called the resort but was told to contact police as it was dealing with the case.
The police were unavailable for comment.
This article was amended to correct the gender of the child based on information from a hospital source.
