Maldives police are investigating the death of a Chinese tourist, a resort confirmed Tuesday.

The victim, reported to be a 27-year old man, was snorkelling in the lagoon of Finolhu resort when he ‘collided’ with a boat propeller. His companion, a 24-year old woman, was injured.

“We cannot share information because there is a police investigation,” the resort told the Maldives Independent when asked for a statement. “We cannot say anything.”

Police made no comment Sunday, when the grisly incident occurred, about the accident or the injuries.

Nor did they say anything more than 48 hours later when asked about investigation details, whether the Chinese embassy had been informed and if anyone was being questioned.

China remains the single biggest contributor of tourists to the Maldives, despite a drop in May numbers.

There were just 16,927 Chinese arrivals in May, compared to 23,225 for the same period last year.
