A special commemorative shield was presented to former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at this year's Victory Day ceremony in recognition of his "exemplary leadership" during the November 3, 1988 attack. Commemorative shields were also awarded to the families of the eight soldiers and 11 civilians who were killed during the coup attempt by Tamil mercenaries led by a group of Maldivians. Video tributes were screened for the two corporals who died defending the military headquarters in Malé. In his address, President Muizzu emphasised the homogenous Maldivian identity and warned that threats to independence and unity no longer came from "swords and guns."
Victory Day celebrations in Malé included a flag-hoisting and guard mounting ceremony at the November 3 monument memorial and a military display at the Republic Square observed by the president. The display featured the response to a simulated terror attack as well as rappelling exercises, field counter-attack manoeuvres and demonstrations of operations by the Coast Guard's special boat squadron. The MNDF showcased the new 60-metre, Dogan class missile boat donated by Turkiye as well as the Ajban 442A light armoured vehicles manufactured by the UAE-based EDGE Group.
A Victory Day memorial monument was unveiled in Kulhudhuffushi in honour of native son Hussain Adam, a 20-year-old corporal revered as a national hero for holding back the mercenaries at the Bandaara Koshi gate until he ran out of bullets.
A 25-year-old Maldivian man who was critically injured after a Maldives Ports Limited landing craft capsized near the Malé commercial harbour died while undergoing treatment at IGMH. Ali Alfah Abdulla, from Gaaf Alif Gemanafushi, was the second MPL employee killed in the accident. Masood Hossain, 32, a Bangladeshi national who was caught inside when the vessel turned over, passed away on Sunday. The ports authority launched an internal inquiry after it was accused of negligence and failure to conduct a safety check before two excavators were unloaded from a ship onto the landing craft. The Port Workers Union called for "institutional accountability and safety enforcement" in the wake of the "preventable" tragic deaths, which it said "underscores an urgent and ongoing concern: the consistent implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines" across all MPL operations.
Based on the outcome of the October 25 referendum in Addu City, President Muizzu designated Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo as two distinct inhabited islands and established separate island councils. Addu City was redefined without the two islands and the Addu City Council was reconstituted to include the administrative districts of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo and Feydhoo. However, the changes will take effect after the local council elections in March. Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo will remain wards of Addu City until the new island councils are elected.
The Maldives Islamic Bank posted a net profit of MVR 92.39 million (US$ 5.9 million) for the third quarter of 2025, up 13 percent from the previous year. MIB’s total assets rose by 11.12 percent from the previous quarter and customer deposits reached MVR 12.11 billion. The growth was "driven by robust financing operations, improved cost efficiency, and the continued adoption of digital banking services such as Faisanet and Faisamobile," MIB said.
President Muizzu authorised the operationalisation of the first air station of the MNDF's Air Corps, which would "support airspace surveillance, monitoring of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and the execution of Air Corps operations."
