Pension exodus, ADK tower and child exploitation

News in brief from Wednesday, February 4.

Pension Office CEO Sujatha Haleem resigned, becoming the fifth official to leave after the board approved the purchase of an MVR 2.4 billion (US$ 155.5 million) government bond. Her departure follows the resignations of chairman Ahmed Inaz, board members Ahmed Saruvash Adam and Ashraf Rasheed, and chief financial officer Hawwa Fajwa, all of whom objected to the transaction.

ADK Hospital signed an agreement with China's Rotime Engineering and Technology Co to build a 13-storey extension as part of the fourth phase of its expansion. The hospital said the new building would enhance its capacity, facilities and service delivery.

Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen warned that the harshest penalties will be imposed on those who exploit minors for criminal activities, following the arrest of two men in Malé accused of using a 16-year-old boy to transport drugs. The suspects, Hassan Nuaaz, 28, and Ahmed Naeem, 39, were arrested in a joint operation by the police’s Family and Child Protection Department and the Drug Enforcement and Counter Narcotics Intelligence Department on Sunday. The criminal court remanded both men in custody for 15 days.

The state-owned Maldives Innovation and Digital Company and Bank of Maldives signed an agreement to establish an AI and Data Competency Centre. MINDCo said the centre would support government institutions in adopting AI-enabled solutions to improve service delivery and efficiency. It is expected to begin operations in April.

HDC completed repairs to sewage lines damaged in a fire at a Hiya tower in Hulhumalé earlier this week. The National Disaster Management Authority said 148 people from 31 apartments who were provided temporary shelter will return to their homes on Wednesday.     

The Malé City Council passed a resolution to ask the housing ministry to discuss matters relating to the administration's 'Housing for All' scheme for the Greater Malé Area. 

Ahead of President Muizzu’s address at the opening of parliament on Thursday, the Maldivian Democratic Party parliamentary group held a press conference to draw attention to what it said were unfulfilled pledges from Muizzu’s previous two addresses. Hanimadhoo MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa, the party's interim chairman, said about 90 percent of those promises remain unmet, despite the government having spent a combined MVR 176 billion over the past two years.

The National Fertility Centre marked its first anniversary at a ceremony attended by the first couple, where it was announced that 23 women have conceived after receiving fertility treatment at the centre. At least two of those women have given birth since last month.

President Muizzu conveyed greetings to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on the occasion of Independence Day, describing Sri Lanka as one of the closest and most trustworthy friends of Maldives.
