Irish tourist drowns in Maldives

A tourist from Ireland has died after drowning on holiday in the Maldives.

Maldives police said he was 30-years-old, but refused to reveal further details. Irish media named him as Andrew Roddy and said that he was on honeymoon.

A spokesperson for the foreign ministry was unavailable for comment.

In a separate incident, a policeman from Gaafu Alifu atoll Villigili died after getting caught in strong currents off the island.

Mohamed Haneef, from the island of Kaafu atoll Kaashidhoo, was swimming with his wife when the accident occurred.

Haneef’s wife, Labeena Zuhair, described the moment to local newspaper Mihaaru.

“The currents started pulling him away. Haneef said that something is wrong. Then I saw him drowning. I tried to give him my hand, but could not,” Labeena said.

Haneef is survived by his wife Labeena and a five year old child from his first marriage.
