Thousand accidents, snorkelling death and unresolved murder

News in brief from Monday, July 14.

1,101 accidents occurred within Malé and on the Sinamalé bridge and Hulhumalé highway from January to June, six percent of which resulted in serious injuries. The most common accident involved the collision of motorcycles and cars. The police statistics were posted amid renewed concern and debate over road safety following the death of a 17-year-old boy in a motorcycle crash. Hundreds gathered for the funeral of Yoosuf Alson Mohamed, the only child of singers Mohamed Abdul Ghani and Mariyam Ashfa, as condolences poured in from politicians and colleagues in the entertainment industry. 

A 15-year-old boy who went missing while snorkelling in Alif Dhaal Maamigili was found dead. His body was found 18 metres deep in the lagoon after a joint search effort by islanders, police and soldiers.

No arrests were made and the motive for the brutal murder of a 65-year-old man in Alif Alif Maalhos remained unclear as police officers searched the beach and collected forensic samples. Abdul Rahman Mohamed's killing stunned the small community of about 500 people, who refused to believe anyone from the island was capable of murder and suspected the assailant must have come from outside.

Police recovered MVR 80,000 (US$ 5,180) from alleged "con artist" Zaidhan Mohamed Hashim, 28, who was released after nearly a month in custody. Zaidhan was arrested on June 17 with his 30-year-old Bangladeshi wife Afrin Akhtarin over purchases from three shops in Malé and Hulhumalé with fake payment receipts.

Citing other commitments, the foreign minister excused himself from attending parliament to answer a question posed by an opposition lawmaker about the president's meeting with a "fake" Saudi prince.

The death of a 43-year-old man, who was taken to IGMH after he was found collapsed inside his bedroom with no sign of external injuries, is under investigation, police told the media. The deceased was identified as Mohamed Rasheed from the Machchangoalhi Sainosar house in Malé.

The fire station at the airport under development in Faafu Magoodhoo was vandalised. The building's windows were smashed, the ceiling was damaged and a chair was set on fire.

Parliament debated a new trademark bill submitted by the government.

The president sought parliamentary approval to extend the term of Children's Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeq by five years.

The animal welfare ministry made a new announcement seeking a party to manage the Olhuhiya pet care facility in Hulhumalé.

The government disbursed MVR 85 million to 1,100 students under the tuition-free first degree scheme this year, the higher education ministry revealed.
