STELCO shuffle, whistleblower retaliation and 20-year plan

News in brief from Sunday, September 7.

Hussain Fahmy was sacked as STELCO managing director for undisclosed reasons. He was replaced with Ahmed Shamah, the former CEO of MIFCO who had been transferred to the fisheries ministry after suspensions over alleged misuse of company resources and the hiring of friends and relatives. Fahmy thanked the president for "granting me the privilege of leading STELCO which I have served for 27 years."

A Children's Ombudsperson's Office employee was falsely accused of inappropriate behaviour and fired in retaliation for whistleblowing, the Human Rights Commission’s Whistleblower Protection Unit ruled. Contrary to the Ombudsperson's Office justification of the dismissal on the grounds of misconduct, the unit found no documentation to support the claim. A low performance appraisal was found to have been signed by supervisor who had resigned. The sacked employee was entitled to seek compensation for unfair termination, the unit advised.

The opposition MDP declined to participate in efforts to develop a 20-year National Development Plan, a key pledge of President Muizzu, citing concerns about the process and criticising the government for moving ahead with large-scale infrastructure projects, such as airport development, without a clearly defined national plan while other projects remain incomplete. Nexia Maldives, the firm tasked with public consultations, has met with a number of state institutions and began field visits to islands this week.

Two women aged 20 and 22 were treated at the Addu Equatorial Hospital for minor injuries sustained in a violent altercation in Hithadhoo. The cause of the dispute was unclear but according to social media posts with video of the fight, the quarrel began following a film screening. Police said the incident was being investigated, but no arrests have been made.

Police conducted a one-hour security sweep of the Rehendhi School in Hulhumalé over a threatening email, the education minister confirmed. Officers arrived at 9am and found no suspicious activity.

The Fahi Dhirirulhun Corporation started accepting security deposits to hand over 4,000 flats in Hulhumalé. Some 3,000 recipients chosen under the previous government's social housing scheme have completed signing their agreements.

President Muizzu re-apppointed Mohamed Nasih as the chair of the Civil Service Commission. Dr Hussein Faiz and Dr Dheeba were appointed as members of the commission following parliamentary approval last month.

The housing ministry invited applications for 200 flats in Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo. Native residents over 18 years of age and other residents who have lived on the island for 10 years are eligible.
