The Waste Management Corporation blamed overdue payments for the failure to deposit employee pension contributions for the past 14 months. WAMCO's last payment was in October 2024, a right to information request by Ahmed Afrah for a list of state-owned enterprises and their pension contributions revealed. Other SOEs with overdue payments included the Business Centre Corporation, which made the last contributions in September. In a statement following media reports, WAMCO said it was financially dependent on government subsidies and income from services. Dues included MVR 98 million (US$ 6.3 million) owed by the Malé City Council over the past two years, the company said.
