Shangri-La reopening, US vessel and control commission

News in brief from Tuesday, September 30.

The Shangri-La Villingili in Addu City announced the resort's long-awaited reopening on December 31. The luxury resort employed 500 staff before its closure in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The tourism ministry hailed the property as a "vital pillar" of the southernmost atoll's economy.

A US naval research vessel arrived in the Maldives and docked near Malé. The Ocean Titan, operated by the Pacific Survey Group, sailed from Australia, Adhadhu reported, citing satellite tracking data.

Parliament invited applications for membership on the new Media and Broadcasting Commission.

A group of religious scholars condemned yoga classes in exercise studios, calling the practice a Hindu religious ritual and act of worship forbidden by Islam. The reiteration of the consensus opinion of 104 local clerics followed the opening of a new women's wellness centre for yoga and pilates in Malé. The Balance Studio was inaugurated last week by Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister Dr Mariyam Mariya.
