Police warning, Ari tour and US$ 50 million dredger

News in brief from Monday, October 6.

Police warned of legal action against social media posts that identify individual police officers from Friday night's protest, alleging attempts to intimidate and incite hatred against officers and their families. The warning came after photos and personal information of an officer who operated a Long Range Acoustic Device were widely circulated amid outrage over the deployment of the sonic weapon.

President Muizzu embarked on a three-day tour of Alif Dhaalu atoll, launching several development projects including harbour expansion, land reclamation, and coastal protection in Dhagethi; a police post, health centre and coastal protection in Dhigurah; a futsal pitch, health centre and fitness centre in Dhidhdhoo; and a police station, health centre, waste management centre, volleyball court and running track in Fenfushi. At a rally in Maamigili on his last stop of the day, he announced plans for direct communication between healthcare providers and government officers, and oversaw the signing of an agreement to establish an Islamic University of Maldives campus on the island. Earlier in the day, he added three additional lagoons to Omadhoo’s jurisdiction.  

The Maldives Airports Company Limited board approved hiring a dredger for MVR 771 million (US$ 50 million) to reclaim land for five airport projects, an amount that exceeds the MVR 486.54 million spent on the MTCC's Mahaa Jarraafu dredger, Adhadhu reported, citing confidential sources who identified the vessel as the Filippo Brunelleschi, which is currently docked in Dubai. 

A Facebook post about the unavailability of chemotherapy medicine went viral. The post detailed a family struggle to secure the life-saving treatment after a change in the bureaucratic procedures involving STO, NSPA and Aasandha.

Authorities suspected arson after a fire damaged the Mathikili eco garden in Addu Meedhoo. The cost of repairing the walkway was estimated to be MVR 600,000.

The MDP condemned the transfer of protesters arrested on Friday night to the Dhoonidhoo detention centre after the criminal court extended their remand period to 15 days. The main opposition party accused police of denying the detainees access to legal counsel ahead of the remand hearing, which it said "undermines due process and further erodes confidence in the fairness of the judicial system.” Police also blocked entry to the MDP’s headquarters with barricades on Sunday night. 

The ruling party supermajority in parliament rejected a motion without notice over the use of sonic weapons to disperse protesters on Friday night. 

Majority Leader Ibrahim Falah called for constitutional amendments to remove MPs who obstruct police, referring to photos of Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir inside a barricade during the MDP's protest on Friday night.

High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz criticised the civil procedures code of 2022, accusing lawmakers of passing it without proper consultation and blaming the law for delays and a backlog of cases. Parliament must consider circumstances, implementation feasibility, and potential consequences, he told MPs on the judiciary committee during a meeting with members of the Judicial Service Commission.

The High Court dismissed a child molestation case after the Prosecutor General's Office withdrew the appeal. The PG office dropped the case citing insufficient evidence available from the lower court, the failure to hold any hearings for two years, and the passage of eight years since the alleged incident. The accused reportedly resides at an MNDF-owned accommodation for both military personnel and civil servants.

Kulhudhuffushi City lost power at sunset for an hour due to a technical issue with the transformers in supplying power. 

The alleged filming of an underage girl in the shower on an island in the central region was under investigation, police told to Dhauru. No arrests had been made after the incident was reported on September 20.
