Police suspensions, judge impeachment and recalled ambassador

After a months-long inquiry into alleged illicit enrichment and graft at the police welfare company, parliament's public accounts committee decided at a closed-door meeting to seek the suspension of the police leadership, including Commissioner Ismail Naveen, five assistant commissioners and the head of intelligence, multiple media outlets reported. The committee's recommendation is to be put to a vote on the parliament floor. Hours before the news broke, parliament postponed the end of the current session by a week, deferring recess until December 4.

Following an ethics probe launched over the release of a suspected drug kingpin, the Judicial Service Commission decided to recommend the removal of Criminal Court Judge Hussain Faiz Rashad by parliament. The investigation established illegal conduct at the remand hearing, the watchdog said. The judge had been suspended in late October.

Maldives Ambassador to Pakistan Mohamed Thoha, who was recalled in November last year over an unauthorised meeting with the Afghan Taliban's top diplomat in Islamabad, was back at his post in Pakistan. The reinstatement was revealed when the Maldives embassy tweeted about Thoha's meeting with the Turkmenistan ambassador to Pakistan.

A STELCO employee was seriously injured in an incident that occurred during repair work on a malfunctioning switcher at the old Hulhumalé powerhouse. The employee sustained burns across his body, STELCO said in a press release. He has been transferred to the ADK hospital after initial treatment at the Hulhumalé, the state utility said, assuring cooperation with the police investigation into the incident and appealing against spreading unverified information that could cause distress to the burn victim's family.

The Bank of Maldives denied legal violations in financing no-bid contracts handed out by the government to 53 local companies, dismissing the opposition's allegations as "baseless" and "factually inaccurate." Lending is approved independently by the bank's board in line with laws and prudential standards, the BML spokesman tweeted from a newly-created X account, appealing against using misleading or inaccurate information for "the pursuit of political objectives." It came after the MDP advised the bank against "participating in the government’s unlawful transactions and financing of unsecured contracts, and warned that officials involved would be held accountable under the next government."

President Muizzu nominated former youth and sports minister Ahmed Mahloof as ambassador to Japan, a week after he formally signed for the ruling party from the opposition MDP.

Parliament approved Hassan Nasih Ahmed, Usama Moosa, Aishath Isha, Shifza Abdul Gayoom and Ahmed Yameen as new members of the Tax Appeal Tribunal.

More than 6,700 tons of water were pumped out after heavy downpours flooded Malé's roads. Soldiers were deployed to protect affected buildings with sandbags and operate pumps in seven locations.

President Muizzu laid the foundation for the Dhaarussalaam Waqf Building in Hulhumalé.
