Police leak, social housing and cat deaths

News in brief from Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11.

Police denied leaking a private photo of opposition activist Aishath Shiman, which appeared on an anonymous X account less than 24 hours after the 20-year-old’s phone was seized over a tweet that was alleged to have encouraged the assassination of President Muizzu. "That data was only my phone. Nowhere else," Shiman told Adhadhu, accusing police of deliberately leaking the photo.

The Fahi Dhirulhun Corporation warned of legal action against the leasing of social housing flats after advertisements started appearing on social media. Some listings offered the flats for about MVR 25,000 (US$ 1,620) – significantly higher than the MVR 10,000 monthly rent for the three-bedroom apartments – a week after FDC started handing over the 4,000 units built in Hulhumalé under the previous administration's Gedhoruveriya scheme. Agreements with recipients who leased their flats will be terminated, the FDC chief warned, as the housing minister announced inspections.

More than 50 cats died at the Olhu Hiya pet care facility in less than a month after operations were handed over to the Feline Welfare Organisation, a team of four animal welfare NGOs found during an inspection conducted last week. The number of cats at the facility was down from 135 to 84 within 20 days. The mass deaths were blamed on disease outbreaks. A report produced by the group flagged insufficient hygiene and sanitation, inadequate recordkeeping, and noncompliance with standard operating procedures.

The tax authority collected MVR 3 billion in September, exceeding forecasts as a nine percent growth in tourist arrivals during August boosted airport fees and tourism-related taxes. The collection of resort lease period extension fees also “contributed significantly to the increment” as the one-off payments had not been part of projections, MIRA noted.

Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan urged voters in Feydhoo and Hulhumeedhoo to reject the proposed creation of separate island councils in the upcoming public referendum on October 25. A single city council empowers the people of the southernmost atoll, the country’s second-largest population centre, to “speak in one voice,” he tweeted, but acknowledged grievances over municipal administration by the Addu City Council based in Hithadhoo.

Poisoning was alleged after ducks, birds and fish at Addu Hulhudhoo's duck park were found dead. Only one duck survived, according to the Hulhudhoo councillor.

A new camping ground for scouts, girl guides and cadets was opened at Crossroads.
