Murder suspects, PNF rally and council finances

Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects on Wednesday night over the murder of Abdul Rahman Mohamed, 65, who was found in his bed with severe head injuries on July 13 in Alif Alif Maalhos. The media identified the suspects as Ahmed Faris, 28, Ahmed Ashid, 28, and Mohamed Visham, 23, all of whom were from Maalhos. They are accused of bludgeoning Abdul Rahman in his sleep in retaliation for alleged sorcery, sources from the island told Dhauru. The victim’s son told Sun the family was unaware of any dispute. Visham was identified as a political appointee as islanders expressed shock over the arrests of the young men, none of whom had prior criminal records. One of the suspects was said to have called Abdul Rahman's son before the public learned of his death.

At the first major rally of his People's National Front, former president Yameen alleged rampant corruption under the Muizzu administration, characterised independent institutions and the courts as paralysed, and criticised the awarding of projects to state-owned enterprises outside the scope of their work, referring to the Waste Management Corporation seeking to operate guesthouses, the Maldives Airports Company Ltd developing fitness centres and the Road Development Corporation building health centres.

The Broadcasting Commission ordered the PNF-aligned Channel 13 to stop their broadcast from 8pm to 9pm with Yameen's "Wake Up" rally due to begin at 8:30pm. Broadcom threatened to take action against the TV station if it “hindered the legal responsibility" of the regulator and noted that it had previously been asked to stop a broadcast in relation to a complaint.
