Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "honoured to be taking part in the 60th Independence Day celebrations" on Saturday. The two-day state visit and the opening of an India-funded airport in the northernmost atoll will boost Indian tourist arrivals, former president Nasheed told ANI, as the opposition MDP president Abdulla Shahid suggested that it was "only natural that we tap into the economic boom that is taking place in India."

The High Court dismissed the state's appeal of a civil court order for the reinstatement of five senior police officers sacked over alleged misconduct and corruption.
