Maalhos murder, fatal accident and Modi visit

Abdul Rahman Mohamed, a 65-year-old man from Alif Alif Maalhos who was found with severe injuries in his bed in the early hours of Sunday, died while undergoing treatment at the island health centre. The case was reported at 1:50am, a police team was dispatched the next morning and the body was later transferred to Malé for an autopsy. The victim's head was bludgeoned while he was asleep, sources from Maalhos told the media. Abdul Rahman lived with his wife but the couple slept in separate bedrooms. Nazima Ibrahim found her husband "struggling for life" and covered in blood when she went into his room around 1:30am to use the bathroom.

A 17-year-old boy was killed in a dangerous accident on Malé's ring road. He was on a motorbike with a 16-year-old boy when it collided with a jogger on a zebra crossing. The crash threw the teenagers under a pickup truck. The jogger, a 40-year-old man, and the other teenager also sustained critical injuries. The deceased was identified as the only son of singers Mohamed Abdul Ghani and Mariyam Ashfa.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to visit the Maldives to attend Independence Day celebrations on July 26, government sources told the media. He is expected to inaugurate Indian-funded projects during the trip.

The body of Zakariyya Mohamed, 79, who went missing on a dinghy last Thursday, was found washed ashore on the uninhabited island of Gan near his home island of Gadhdhoo in Gaaf Dhaal atoll. 

The Supreme Court heard closing arguments in a case filed to unseat ruling party lawmaker Mohamed Sinan over the failure to repay MVR 2.5 million (US$ 162,100) owed to the Maldives Islamic Bank. As the constitution states that an MP “becomes immediately disqualified if he has decreed debt which is not being paid as provided in the judgment," the petitioner argued that the PNC MP for Hithadhoo North should be disqualified over non-compliance with a Hithadhoo magistrate court order from October 2024. The judgment had been delivered in absentia but the magistrate court informed Sinan on the same day. According to records presented during Sunday's hearing, Sinan acknowledged receipt on Viber. But he only settled the outstanding dues of MVR 1.3 million on February 13 after the case was filed at the Supreme Court.

Firefighters put out a fire at a Hulhumalé apartment home to 11 expatriates. Temporary shelter was provided to 21 residents of four apartments evacuated after the fire caused extensive damages.

A suspected scammer wanted in connection with 12 cases was arrested with the help of the public. Saif Ahmed Didi, a 30-year-old man with a prior record for theft and property damage, was accused of taking more than MVR 30,000 from different individuals through various social media platforms.

A fire at an Ensis warehouse on top of its fish cannery in Hulhumalé last week is estimated to have caused damages worth MVR 15 million, the tuna exporter's managing director told Adhadhu. The fourth floor where the fire broke out was used to store furniture and packing material, he said.

President Muizzu dissolved a special inquiry commission formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the unexplained ninth-storey fall of a young woman in April.

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation was renamed Visit Maldives Corporation with a presidential decree. Earlier in the day, the tourism promotion company unveiled its enhanced "Sunny Side of Life" logo.
