Laamu accident, warming oceans and contact tracing

News in brief from Sunday, June 8.

A dangerous collision between a car and a motorbike on the link road connecting Laamu Gan and Fonadhoo left two 44-year-old men on the motorbike with multiple injuries. One of the men was transferred to Malé for surgery to treat fractures in his leg.

Rising ocean temperatures as a result of climate change are shifting fish stocks and eroding shorelines, President Muizzu said in his message to mark World Oceans Day, echoing the fisheries minister's warning that warmer seas were altering migratory patterns of tuna and driving them to deeper waters, resulting in prolonged off-seasons in fishing and reducing the effectiveness of traditional practices that target surface-swimming tuna.

No further cases have been identified so far, but contact tracing and monitoring are ongoing following the death of a man from invasive meningococcal disease, the HPA said.
