Illicit enrichment, chief justice and dollar support

News in brief from Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2.

Ruling party lawmaker Ibrahim Shujau denied wrongdoing after a leaked report flagged illicit enrichment through his events management company. The Baarah MP's Official Events and his cousin Mohamed Nafiz's Quick Sure company were awarded inflated contracts worth MVR 42.5 million (US$ 2.7 million) from the Malé City Council, the finance ministry, the military welfare company and various state-owned enterprises, according to the purported report from the central bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit. But Shujau questioned its authenticity and stressed that he had not been questioned by any investigative body.

The JSC advised the president to nominate Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new chief justice, the media learned. After the interview and evaluation process, the former justice and current president of the Tax Appeal Tribunal scored above the other applicants, family court judge Abdulla Mohamed and former High Court chief judge Shujau Usman. Ghanee had been removed from the bench in December 2019 over ethical misconduct.

The Bank of Maldives increased US dollar support for Maldivians travelling overseas for medical treatment or higher studies, offering up to US$ 2,000 per patient if they are covered by Aasandha or NSPA. The spending limit for students was US$ 1,200.

A vessel transporting waste from the Manafaru resort ran aground on a reef near Noonu Kudarah en route to Thilafushi. The Coast Guard rescued three crew members – one Maldivian and two expatriates – and transferred them to Noonu Holhudhoo.

Mangrove seeds collected from Kulhudhuffushi and Kendhikulhudhoo were sent into space aboard the NASA CRS-11 mission launched on Friday. The Maldives is among 11 countries providing seeds to be studied on the International Space Station to examine how they adapt to microgravity, radiation, and the stresses of spaceflight, according to the Maldives Space Research Organisation.

The first submarine cable landing at a resort was inaugurated at the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, becoming the the first private 5G-ready island resort in partnership with Ooredoo.

No additional fees will be charged after the expansion of Malé's north harbour, the ports authority said.
