Housing update, phone leaks and referendum revision

News in brief from Sunday, October 12.

Briefing the press on the ongoing handover of 4,000 flats awarded under the Gedhoruveriya scheme, Housing Minister Dr Muththalib assured that the previous government's allocation of three-bedroom units to 315 applicants who scored 75 points after excluding 330 applicants who scored 76 points will be remedied. Agreements signed with the former have been cancelled to award the flats to applicants with the higher score. The remaining units will be allocated through a lottery draw among applicants who scored 75 points, some of whom will be offered "the option of two-bedroom flats." The minister also revealed that the recipients include 976 people whose spouses had previously been awarded social housing. However, there were no legal grounds to disqualify them, he said.
