Fenaka graft, protest banners and Adheeb files

News in brief from Friday and Saturday, September 26 and 27.

Corruption exposed in a damning audit of the Fenaka Corporation dominated headlines over the weekend. Between 2021 and 2023, the debt-ridden state-owned utility carried out several projects at inflated costs and awarded contracts worth MVR 1.4 billion (US$ 90 million) without competitive bidding processes. Police investigations are underway into the suspected misappropriation of MVR 2.2 billion, President Muizzu said on Friday night, pledging to enact a new asset recovery law. Ahmed Saeed, Fenaka's former managing director, meanwhile denied any wrongdoing. He is facing charges over the procurement rule violations in the purchase of a privately-owned ice plant.

President Muizzu returned to Malé after completing a week-long tour of four south-central atolls, during which he opened ATMs on 16 islands, launched the RTL ferry service in Thaa atoll, and pledged a raft of new infrastructure projects.

Following her arrest on Wednesday on assault charges after allegedly forcibly entering a residence in Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo, using abusive language, and threatening a group of minors, Aminath Feyzleen, a 49-year-old popular TikTok content creator, was released after posting bail of MVR 10,000.

Inayath Ali, a presenter on state TV and radio, was among three suspects arrested in a counter-narcotics operation in Malé. The 34-year-old woman was taken into custody after police raided two homes and found 1,246 grams of drugs.
