Ex-MP benefits, Mahloof out and street lights

President Muizzu backed reducing allowances for former presidents and MPs. "We are the servants of the people," he was widely reported as saying in a WhatsApp message to ruling party lawmakers, as public outrage mounted over revelations from an RTI disclosure about MVR 35 million (US$ 2.2 million) spent on benefits for former lawmakers. Former presidents receive up to MVR 175,000 a month, while ex-MPs collect 30 to 45 percent of their previous salaries in addition to other benefits such as health insurance.

Former youth minister Ahmed Mahloof resigned from the opposition MDP to take up a senior government post. The reason for his departure will be "clear to those who need to know," Mahloof said

President Muizzu asked STELCO and Fenaka to charge domestic instead of commercial rates for street and public lighting from January 1. The change will free up council funds for other municipal services, he said.

MDP MPs and activists protested outside the finance ministry over the minister's failure to respond to parliamentary questions on government spending. Police prevented protesters from going inside the office to meet the minister.

A tornado swept through Addu City's Maradhoo Feydhoo and damaged six houses. The National Disaster Management Authority said it was coordinating with the city council to provide assistance to residents of the affected households. 

A total of US$ 73 million provided to import businesses as dollar support for telegraphic transfers from January to August – covering 30 to 50 percent of requested amounts – was up from US$ 69 million provided during the whole of 2024, the Bank of Maldives revealed.

President Muizzu appointed two members to fill vacancies on the Human Rights Commission. Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood, former CEO of the Local Government Authority, and Ahmed Magsoom were sworn in at a ceremony at the President’s Office. 

The Visit Maldives Corporation launched a new platform called "The Events Calendar" as a hub for upcoming festivals, sports tournaments and entertainment activities.

The president designated Alif Alif Maafaru lagoon as part of Feridhoo’s jurisdiction. The move fulfilled a pledge to provide a sustainable source of income to support Feridhoo’s development, the President’s Office said.

The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators announced the resignation of CEO Aminath Suzan, saying "her vision shaped a defining era."

The transport ministry ordered the Malé City Council to cancel all rented street parking spaces and make them publicly accessible later this month. Mayor Adam Azim confirmed that existing leases will not be renewed and no new parking spaces will be rented out.

A dozen students from 11 schools across the country will depart for China on Tuesday as part of the Youth Exchange Programme 2025, the education ministry announced. The programme was organised by the Chinese embassy in response to a request from the ministry.
