Chief justice, HDC suspensions and vape fines

Parliament confirmed Tax Appeal Tribunal president Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice. He was previously removed from the Supreme Court bench in 2019 after a brief stint from 2018. Ghanee succeeds Muthasim Adnan, who retired last month.

Five top officials of the Housing Development Corporation were suspended indefinitely on the alleged orders of the ruling party.

Fines of MVR 127,000 (US$ 8,200) were imposed on 22 individuals over the sale, use, and possession of vaping devices, police revealed. Most of the 15 cases involved the use and possession of the devices. Since the ban came into force in December, 69 people were fined a total MVR 400 million for importing vape products as of mid-June, Customs revealed to Mihaaru.

The government proposed legal changes to expand the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority’s powers and introduce harsher fines and jail terms for tax evasion and failure to submit tax documents.

Sri Lanka has started issuing one‑year medical and spousal visas to Maldivians with effect from August 1, the foreign ministry announced.

Couples who both qualified for flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme had been excluded from the November 2023 lottery draw, former state minister for housing Akram Kamaluddin explained, after the government decided to award one flat per couple. According to Akram, such applicants who scored above 76 points in the three‑bedroom category had been placed on a separate list with enough flats reserved for them. He accused the current administration of sidelining civil servants and creating confusion by failing to clarify the process.
