Bari murder, diving death and airline losses

News in brief from Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14.

Former Islamic minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari was murdered, former home minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla alleged on X, declaring certainty over "long-held suspicions" about his death after a stroke in 2018. Imran, the Adhaalath Party leader who was in charge of the police during the previous administration, did not provide any evidence or further details. 

A 27-year-old Japanese tourist who went missing while diving near Maafushi was found dead after a three-hour Coast Guard search.

The national airline Maldivian operated at a loss of MVR 2.8 million (US$ 181,580) last year, audited finances of the state-owned Island Aviation Services revealed. It was the fifth consecutive year of losses after the Covid-19 pandemic. An operating profit of MVR 171 million, mainly generated from domestic flights, was offset by taxes and financing costs. But the annual loss was down sharply from MVR 71.4 million in 2023.  

A three-day “Education and Wellness Expo” kicked off in Hulhumalé on Friday with more than 200 higher education and training opportunities on offer.  

Maldivian Hajj pilgrims started returning with all 1,000 pilgrims due back by Tuesday.

President Muizzu condemned Israel’s attack on Iran as “a grave violation of international law,” urging de-escalation and calling for immediate action.

The Indian High Commission expressed "satisfaction" with a US$ 400 million currency swap that helped shore up depleted foreign currency reserves, "which alleviated imminent external liquidity strains as noted by Fitch credit rating for Maldives."
