The rape of a 16-year-old girl at a guesthouse in Malé is under investigation with a suspect in custody.
The criminal court has remanded the man to police custody for 15 days, CNM reported Sunday.
The rape was reported to police on September 25.
“It’s a man the girl somewhat knew. She didn’t know he was taking her to a guesthouse when she went with him. He forced her into the guesthouse,” a source familiar with the matter told CNM.
The suspect had a criminal record.
In a separate case, police are investigating the rape of a migrant worker maid in a house in the Henveiru ward of the capital.
The second case was reported on Friday.
According to police statistics, 31 cases of sexual offences were submitted in September. There were 355 sexual offence cases reported to police in 2017.
It is unclear how many cases were successfully prosecuted.
In July, three men were arrested in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Malé.
