Two minors were taken into police custody in connection with attacks on students this week, police have said, while confirming that the two cases are unrelated.

Police said a 14-year-old held in connection with the first attack was handed over to the family, but a 15-year-old connected to the second attack is being detained for 10 days.

Ahmed Shifan, the police spokesman, confirmed the attacks were unrelated and advised the public to refrain from spreading rumours on social media.

“Attacks on two days, two consecutive days. That does not mean these two cases are related,” he said at a press briefing by the Education Ministry.

“We advise the public to be responsible in using social media by making sure that things do not escalate. I note once again, that these two attacks did not occur because of concerning elements in the school environment,” he said. “From our evaluation, the school environment is very safe.”

On Tuesday, two men assaulted a student inside Thaajuddeen School in Malé while a student from Dharumavantha school was stabbed on Wednesday.
