Police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old woman found hanged last Thursday on the island of Nolhivaram in Haa Dhaal atoll.
A family member told newspaper Mihaaru that Shahida Ali was suffering from mental health problems but raised suspicions about her death. The family doubts that she could have tied a rope to eaves 12-feet high, noting the absence of either a chair or ladder in the open air toilet where she found.
Shahida was asleep when her husband went to the mosque next door for the dawn prayer. He heard her crying from the mosque and came back to find her dead, the family member said, adding that police from the island station took down the body and investigators later arrived from Kulhudhuffushi and Malé.
According to local media, the body was brought to the capital Sunday and police have decided to conduct a postmortem in India.
