Turf rolls stored behind the tennis court in Malé’s Ekuveni sports complex caught fire around 7pm on Saturday night.
No one was harmed and the fire was put out around 7:40pm by firefighters from the military’s fire and rescue service.
Most of the turf rolls were salvaged and undamaged, newspaper Mihaaru reported Sunday, citing an unnamed official.
Donated by China, the turf rolls were kept between the tennis court and jogging track along with fence rolls and other equipment. The material was to be used to make football pitches on several islands.
It was a turf roll that caught on fire, according to reports. The fire was quickly controlled before it could spread, the Maldives National Defence Force said.
The MNDF declined to provide further information as a police investigation was ongoing.
