Friends of a 21-year-old surfer who died in an accident have mourned his death.

Abdulla Naail was reported missing while out on Saturday at Thamburudhoo island in Kaafu atoll. The Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard said he was found on the island’s eastern side.

Naail was taken to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Malé, where he died, according to the MNDF.

Local media said he had worked as a photojournalist..

Raalhu Edhuru, a mobile surf school, tweeted: “We all come from the sea, but we are not all of the sea.

“Those of us who are, we children of the tides, must return to it again and again, until the day we don’t come back leaving behind only that which was touched along the way.”

Naail was buried Sunday morning.
