A parliamentary committee has decided to increase funds allocated for cabinet ministers’ health insurance by MVR5,000.
The amount was previously MVR19,000 (US$1,212) a year for government ministers, their spouses and children under 18. The scheme was increased to MVR24,000 after President Abdulla Yameen submitted a formal request, local media reported.
Allied Insurance Company had offered a special package for MVR19,000 but found it could not offer the same benefits at the initial price.
The committee also decided to extend the insurance scheme to include members of the National Integrity Commission, their spouses and children under 18 years.
