Police and army divers found the dinghy of a missing 79-year-old man 10 metres deep in the channel between Gaaf Dhaal Gadhdhoo and Gan. The search continued for Zakariyya Mohamed, who went missing amid rough weather on Thursday.
An investigation is underway into the death of a 47-year-old American tourist while snorkelling in Ari atoll, police told the media. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. The authorities did not disclose the name of the resort where the man had been staying. According to police statistics revealed by a lawmaker last week, 112 tourists died in accidents at sea over the past five years.

The PG office pressed charges against former Fenaka managing director Ahmed Saeed over alleged abuse of authority in the purchase of an ice plant. The case was filed after the anti-corruption watchdog sought graft charges against Saeed and Fenaka's chief accountant in April over violations of the utility company’s procurement rules in buying the ice plant without consulting the tender evaluation committee. Saeed also faces trial in a separate case involving payment for a project awarded in 2019 before work was completed. Both charges carry a prison sentence of one year and seven months.
The Sovereign Development Fund stood at MVR 7.5 billion (US$ 486 million) by the end of 2023, but only 35 percent of it was in US dollars and 88 percent was invested in government securities, limiting liquidity for debt repayment, according to a review by the Auditor General, who highlighted deficiencies in the legal framework and problematic investment decisions, such as loans of MVR 204 million to HDC, deferred until 2030 due to nonpayment.
