The Maldives Meteorology Service has issued a yellow alert, warning of strong winds and rough seas as three people involved in a boat capsize were treated for minor injuries.

In an advisory issued Thursday afternoon, the Met said there would be torrential rain and gusts of up to 45 miles per hour.

It also said rough seas are expected between Kaafu and Laamu atoll from 12:45 pm to 4:45 pm, having earlier warned of swell waves during high tides.

Police confirmed Thursday that a Maldivian and two foreign workers were treated in hospital for minor injuries caused by a capsized boat.

It capsized near Aarah island in Vaavu atoll at around 11:30 am.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has cancelled atoll ferries due to the bad weather, saying that 20 ferries to nine atolls have been temporarily suspended.

The country has been experiencing heavy rains and strong winds for the past few days with the onset of the south-west monsoon.
