Survey reveals barriers for women’s political participation
A majority of Maldivians believe that men make better leaders than women and only 39 percent agree that a woman could serve as president, a nationwide survey conducted by Transparency Maldives has revealed. Nine out of ten Maldivians also believe that “a good wife will always obey her husband, even if she disagrees with him.”

Supreme Court strikes down sentence of death by stoning
The magistrate court verdict marked the first time a person was sentenced to death by stoning in the Maldives and sparked heated debate and outrage on social media. Invoking powers under “supervisory jurisdiction,” the Supreme Court said the magistrate court decided the case “in violation of judicial and legal procedures”.

Toddler dies of injuries after falling into open elevator shaft
“She died because of serious brain injuries suffered from the fall. The impact of the fall had caused internal bleeding of the brain. Furthermore her skull was fractured in multiple areas causing some of the fractured bones to go into the brain,” said Dr Abdulla Niyaz, chief medical officer at ADK.

Toddler in critical condition after falling into open elevator shaft
An eight-month-old toddler is in critical condition after falling into an open elevator shaft with her 57-year-old grandmother from the sixth floor of a residence in Malé today. The woman is reportedly recovering from injuries, but the condition of the child is serious as she had suffered a broken foot and skull fractures.

Japan grants US$20m for digital broadcasting network project
“With the adoption of the ISDB network, Maldivian broadcasters can cost efficiently send their broadcasting signals across Maldives with ease,” Home Minister Umar Naseer said after signing the agreement with the the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA). ISDB-T is a technical standard for digital broadcasting developed by Japanese and Brazilian experts.

Staff injured in fire at Olhuveli resort
An employee at the Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort in South Malé atoll was injured in a fire last night. A police media official told The Maldives Independent that the was reported around 7:40pm. The victim suffered minor burns and was brought to Malé for treatment.

Fishermen barred from Malé north harbor
Fishermen are complaining of lack of dock space at Malé’s harbors after vessels were cleared out from the new presidential jetty, Izzuddin pier. Some are now swimming to shore with their catch because they are unable to unload at the congested local market harbor, the only area now open to fishermen.
