Supreme Court strikes down court order over “inappropriate language”

“[D]o you not know what was said in the court order? Is that why you are depositing different amounts of money on different months? I thought you are intelligent people. You must adhere to this court’s ruling. Even Pallambe, Ammakalhey, and Yahya would know to follow the order. This is a bit too much,” said the order in question.

The Supreme Court has struck down a magistrate court order over “language inappropriate for a judicial ruling or writ.”

The Maafushi Island magistrate court’s letter, sent to the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) on September 16, concerned the reduction of alimony payments from the salary of a prisons staff member.

The payment was to be deposited with the court to be handed over to the child’s mother.

“[D]o you not know what was said in the court order? Is that why you are depositing different amounts of money on different months? I thought you are intelligent people. You must adhere to this court’s ruling,” said the letter signed by Judge Ibrahim Saeed.

“Even Pallambe, Ammakalhey, and Yahya would know to follow the order. This is a bit too much.”

The letter had gone viral on social media.
