Two men aged 28 years and 50 years were arrested Friday night over the suspected murder of a young woman in Malé.
Hawwa Zuha, 23 years, was found lying on a narrow lane on Thursday morning. She was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The police later said they suspect she was murdered and her body thrown on the street.
In a statement today, the police said the two murder suspects were arrested under a court warrant and their residences were searched.
The police plan to conduct a post mortem on Zuha’s body and are making preparations to send her body abroad. A date has not been specified yet.
Zuha’s murder is the first this year. Some 32 people have lost their lives to violent crime in the Maldives since 2010. At least eight were killed last year alone.
