Maldives police on Monday declared a manhunt after an 18-year-old was stabbed to death in the capital at the weekend.
Ibrahim Agil was attacked on Saturday near the Maldives Monetary Authority building in Malé’s northern waterfront, a short distance from police and military headquarters.
Police said they were looking for Hamdhoon Hamzath, also aged 18, from Laamu Fonadhoo ‘Hiyaa’.
Police asked anyone with information to contact the police hotline on 3322211 or the Serious and Organised Crime Department on  9911099.
A source close to the victim’s family told Mihaaru earlier that Agil was attacked upon returning to the capital after visiting his girlfriend on a nearby island.
His attackers were waiting for him when he arrived at the jetty, the source said.
“They attacked him when he got off (the speedboat). They stabbed him in the chest. Most likely they were spying on him and waiting to attack him when he arrived.”
The family asked people to stop sharing a “painful” video of Agil after he was stabbed. It shows him on the ground fighting for his life while people look on.
Agil was from the island of Fares-Maathoda, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
