Man in custody for assaulting woman in the street

Police arrested a man on Saturday morning suspected of assaulting his girlfriend on the street in Malé.

“Police arrived on the scene and learnt it was a case of domestic violence between an unmarried couple,” a police spokesman told the media.

“There were visible signs of injury on the woman’s arm and head. The woman was immediately taken to hospital and the man was arrested at the scene.”

Police said the man was remanded in custody for five days by a court on Sunday night.

Pictures of the assault taken from a nearby building were posted on social media. The pictures show a half naked man standing over a partially dressed woman.
