A man died Sunday after being attacked by a fish while he was collecting sea cucumbers, local media reported.
The incident took place in Alif Dhaalu atoll.
Ahmed Haleem, 29, was first treated at the atoll hospital in Mahibadhoo.
He was dispatched to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in the capital for further treatment, but died while being transferred to Malé.
An official at Mahibadhoo hospital said Haleem’s condition had been severe when he was admitted.
“We couldn’t stop the bleeding. The cornetfish was very deeply embedded into his neck,” the official told Mihaaru.
Haleem is from Maalhendhoo island, Noonu atoll.
