The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) signed a contract with the Consortium of Mohan Mutha Exports and Ashoka Buildcon for “the construction and development of all major road networks in Hulhumalé Phase II, [and] connecting all the neighbourhoods and commercial areas such as the tourism district, yacht marina and knowledge park.”

The finance ministry has put a halt to spending on development projects in a bid to reign in a ballooning budget deficit. The ministry has also imposed a hiring freeze, restricted overtime pay, and ordered offices to stop domestic and international travel. Offices are to be closed by 2:30pm at the latest.

Government’s estimate for 2015 economic growth unrealistic, says World Bank
High levels of public debt “driven by high and rising public spending” is the immediate macroeconomic challenge facing the Maldives, observed the World Bank’s South Asia Economic Focus report released last week. The government’s forecast for economic growth is 8.5 percent, but both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expect the Maldivian economy to grow by 5 percent this year.

The Maldives has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent before 2030 in a new action plan. The target falls far short of ambitious plans announced by President Mohamed Nasheed in early 2009 to become carbon neutral by 2020, which has since been scrapped by successive administrations.
