The Maldives government staged a grand spectacle to mark the 60th anniversary of independence, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as guest of honour and a record-breaking fireworks display for the partial opening of the new airport terminal.
Ahmed Inan photographed the July 26 military parade in Malé, choosing to shoot in black and white. “It didn’t feel like a celebration for the people,” he said. “Black and white depicts what the environment and surroundings felt like.”
The monochrome treatment reflected his perception of the subdued atmosphere. He opted for colour to capture the float parade on the following night.
