A shop and staff barracks burnt down late last night at the high-security prison on the island of Maafushi in Kaafu atoll.
Hassan Ali, spokesman for the Maldives Correctional Services told The Maldives Independent that the fire had occurred around 2:50 am. The cause is yet to be identified.
No staff or inmate was injured, Ali said.
The police said in a statement that the fire was reported around 3:15am. Police officers based at the Maafushi police station worked with MCS to put out the fire.
The fire broke out at the staff shop and spread to the barracks. The police said that Maafushi Police station is investigating the case.
