Four expatriate workers sustained minor injuries after a fire broke out at the housing ministry’s labour quarters in the capital.

The fire was extinguished about half an hour after it was reported around 3:08 am Saturday morning, the Maldives National Defence Force told the media.

The expatriates who were asleep inside were rushed to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital with the help of the Maldives Red Crescent. They escaped without serious injuries but suffered from heavy smoke inhalation, according to the MNDF’s fire and rescue service.

The fire caused extensive damage to the two-storey labour quarters, which is located next to the police tow yard in Malé’s southwestern waterfront.

A police investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
