The former auditor general says Yameen dismissed concerns over his top lieutenant’s corruption.

President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday responded to allegations made by former auditor general Niyaz Ibrahim about ignoring flagged corrupt dealings by his jailed former deputy.
Niyaz, who fled into exile in late 2016 after appearing in an Al Jazeera exposé, has long maintained that he had personally raised concerns with the president over millions funnelled through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation to companies linked to then-tourism minister Ahmed Adeeb.
But Yameen accused him of harbouring “a personal grudge against Adeeb.”
Speaking on Nolhivaranfaru island, Yameen acknowledged the mid-2014 meeting took place but stressed that it was not about Niyaz’s concerns over the lease of 160 islands as claimed by the opposition.
