The Maldivian people want to restore democracy with a national unity government at the helm, Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim tweeted from exile Wednesday.

After meeting with former MDP chairman Ali Waheed, former vice president Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, and JP deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim in Germany, the business tycoon and disqualified lawmaker tweeted: “The public’s hope is to have everyone’s help in bringing the Maldives to the democratic path and establishing a national unity government as the people want.”

The former MP for Maamigili was controversially found guilty of attempted bribery and sentenced to more than three years in prison last August. He was later granted medical leave to seek treatment in Singapore, from where he secured a special permit from the German government to travel to Frankfurt.

Ali Waheed, who lives in exile in the UK, tweeted after the meeting that Gasim supports choosing a unity candidate through a primary process that is fair to all the parties in the opposition coalition.
