Vice President Ahmed Adeeb met with the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Saturday, and presented a letter from President Abdulla Yameen.
Adeeb’s visit to Malta follows one to Egypt on August 5 for the opening of the second Suez Canal. According to the President’s Office, Adeeb’s visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
Malta is an island state in the Mediterranean Sea, with a population of over 450,000. It is also a eurozone member.
Adeeb highlighted the similarities between Malta and the Maldives with Preca, including challenges faced due to climate change. He also “commended President Preca on being a successful woman leader,” said a press statement in English.
This is his first official trip after assuming the office of the vice president.
Sharif Mohamed, the media coordinator at the President’s Office, said Adeeb is scheduled to return to the Maldives on August 11. He will not be visiting other countries.
“There are some Maldivians studying in Malta, that is one other reason for the visit”, Sharif said.
