Dozens of riot police officers have set up barricades on all roads leading to Malé’s Artificial Beach today in an attempt to block a walk organized by the opposition in protest over what watchdog bodies have called the Maldives’ biggest ever corruption scandal.

Maldives sees wave of arrests on sorcery charges
Three elderly men were arrested from two different islands on a charge of practicing black magic this week. Another four were arrested last week. Two men arrested on charges of practicing sorcery
The suspects, aged 24 and 25, were taken into custody on Thursday based on information suggesting the pair were practicing sorcery or black magic, the police said yesterday. The police also searched the homes of the suspect as well as a warehouse with court warrants and confiscated “some items related to the case.”

Policeman fired for theft wins high court bid to get job back
The High Court ruled that the dismissal of former Chief Station Inspector Mohamed Habeeb in February 2014 was unfair as he was not convicted of a crime in a court of law. The Maldives Police Service was ordered to reinstate the ex-policeman and provide compensation for lost wages.

After raid, Sangu TV resumes live transmission
Sangu TV was forced off-air after the police confiscated all of the station’s hard disks during a raid in the early hours of Friday. Ibrahim Waheed ‘Asward,’ Sangu TV’s managing director, said the police have not returned the broadcasting equipment. The station used hard disks from its staff to resume broadcasting at 8:00pm last night.

Midnight raids for weapons continue in Malé
According to local media, the police confiscated a pistol from the Thoathaage house in the Manchangoalhi ward of the capital. However, the suspected weapon reportedly turned out to a toy pistol that shoots plastic beads. The police raided three homes in Malé last night amidst an ongoing 30-day nationwide state of emergency declared over fears of imminent attacks.
