The Maldives celebrated Eid on Sunday with the traditional merriment and festive gatherings.

In the capital, the day began with mass congregations for the morning Eid prayers across stadiums in Greater Malé and concluded with fireworks in Hulhumalé.

A popular children’s evening was organised by the police and military together with state-owned companies in Malé’s Sultan Park, Islamic Centre grounds and Republic Square waterfront, featuring games, cultural performances and costumed mascots. Children took photos with their favourite cartoon characters and played with weapons at the Maldives National Defence Force stall.

In the late afternoon, the Malé City Council designated the customary vehicle-free hours from 4pm to 6pm, offering a respite from traffic congestion in Malé. But Hulhumalé was exempted

After welcoming the public to the presidential residence for Eid greetings in the morning, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed participated in the “Eid Haveeru” activities with their children, exploring the stalls and cutting a massive cake at the Izzuddin Jetty.

After thousands attended on Sunday, the children’s evening is due to continue from 4pm to 6pm on Monday and Tuesday.

Later on Sunday night, a “Hichchah Vadhaigathun” (royal procession) showcased by the heritage ministry in Malé featured a symbolic representation of the Ramadan rituals under abolished monarchy.

The communal festivities concluded with a fireworks display and drone show from the Housing Development Corporation.

On the previous night, decorative Eid lights put up on 64 islands were inaugurated at a ceremony in Hulhumalé.
