Shop, staff quarters destroyed in fire at Maafushi prison

A shop and staff barracks burnt down late last night at the high-security prison on the island of Maafushi in Kaafu atoll.

A shop and staff barracks burnt down late last night at the high-security prison on the island of Maafushi in Kaafu atoll.
Hassan Ali, spokesman for the Maldives Correctional Services told The Maldives Independent that the fire had occurred around 2:50 am. The cause is yet to be identified.
No staff or inmate was injured, Ali said.
The police said in a statement that the fire was reported around 3:15am. Police officers based at the Maafushi police station worked with MCS to put out the fire.
